A Mossad Substation

January 4th, 1980

Nadir Fox sat at the desk in his office, keeping the door open so that he could see the comings and goings of everyone running back and forth through the hallway. While he had access to much of what went on in the substation, he was not privy to everything that The Box did. That was part of the problem, and why Shin Bet had sent what they considered to be one of their best men to keep tabs on Saul Greenbaum and his ultra-secretive group. As Nadir watched the chaos of this operation unfold, there was only one thought that kept circulating in his mind.

“How on earth had this been allowed to go on for so long?”

It was true, Saul Greenbaum and Jacob Mitzak had provided an invaluable service in the post-world war two era, tracking down Nazi war criminals, and stopping cold the rise of a Fourth Reich on American soil, and no one disputed that. Then in nineteen sixty-seven Saul’s fledgling Box had pulled off an impossible operation during the Six Day War that arguably had pulled Israel back from the brink of destruction. Nadir Fox, however, did not believe that should give them a free pass thirteen years later to wreak havoc with no oversight or restrictions. The very idea was insane! Now, with Yitzahk Hofi preparing to step down, the time for change was near. There would soon be a new Mossad, streamlined for operations in the Cold War and with a better understanding of how politics in the real world worked. That organization would have a much greater need for men like Nadir Fox than it would for antiquities like Saul Greenbaum and Jacob Mitzak.

This was why Nadir had been assigned as the liaison to this specific substation, with the mostly unspoken directive to find actionable intelligence that would allow Shin Bet to disassemble The Box and put its remnants in a museum where they belonged. Nadir, being the exceptional intelligence officer that he believed himself to be had taken it a step further, and not in an entirely sanctioned manner. The end would justify the means, and he believed this.

“Shin Bet, right?”

Looking up from his papers Nadir saw Eban Berger, the S13 Team Leader sticking his head in the office door. Nadir liked this young man, and knew that his family had political connections, and that he would most likely go into politics himself one day. All the same, Nadir only nodded, as he did not think it was appropriate for a Shin Bet intelligence officer to jump to attention when a simple commando called him.

“Things are pretty crazy right now, and we could really use your help if you’re up for it.”

“What can I do to help?” Nadir responded.

Eban stepped into the office (without invitation Nadir noted) and wiped some sweat from his brow before speaking. The man was wearing his full assault gear, which the Shin Bet officer could not imagine was very comfortable.

“We think there’s a mole somewhere in this building.
